Every month I select twelve of my favorite photographs I’ve taken and give a little bit of backstory for each one. At the end of the year, I will pick my favorite ten for the year out of the pictures selected in these monthly posts.
What can I say? I took this photograph while walking back to my car in Folsom after doing some street photography. I saw the late afternoon light hitting the lovely yellow wall and knew I had a show stopper as soon as I pressed the shutter button. This is already framed and hanging on the wall in my office. Of a parking garage! Who knew?
Heading to our favorite local coffee shop I noticed the early morning sunlight on this wall full of electrical boxes and piping and grabbed the shot. I like the textures and the moodiness caused by the dark shadows.
I got bored of the same old Farmer’s Market images so I ventured off down some other streets in midtown Sacramento and came across this cafe that had recently opened for the day. I couldn’t resist capturing the light falling across the tables and barstools.
When we go for coffee, I almost always bring my camera along. There’s something about coffee shop scenes, especially in black and white, that give me all the feels inside.
I’ve taken a couple pictures of this building recently in midtown Sacramento. It’s called the Bicycle Kitchen and I just love the corrugated wall and the foliage growing up and around it. I thought this swath of the building with the wood shutters around the windows was my best composition so far.
This scene is similar to the cafe one above, and if I’m honest, not nearly as nice a photograph. In fact, as I’m writing this, I’m wondering if I should swap it out for something else. It’s giving me shoulder shrug vibes at the moment.
The first thing that caught my eye and pushed me to raise the camera were the colors of the bike and the small trailer. What’s a better combo than red and cyan? But then I noticed after the fact the sign pointing to the man in the background as an added bonus.
Typical David, as soon as I write about the wonders of the coffee shop in black and white, I end up displaying one in color. I just love the old style texture of this lamp set against the bare brick wall.
The family took an extended weekend trip down to Disneyland this month. Nothing beats it during Halloween time. I loved the look of this pumpkin jack-o-lantern while waiting in line for the Haunted Mansion.
I will confess that I prefer the Tower of Terror theme to Guardians of the Galaxy but irregardless, it’s still a helluva ride. I just love the mix of colors in the industrial setting with the bright lights.
Our second morning we entered Disney’s California Adventure as our first park of the day. As we strolled by the retro gas station in front of the Soaring Over the World ride, I just had to capture the deep reds of the gas pumps with the teal metal of the building. One of my favorites from the month.
Possibly the best for last. As a father of two daughters, this photograph really hits home for me. They are both grown young women now and I find myself missing the days when they were younger like this little girl in the photo. Nothing beats seeing the wonder in your child’s eyes as they experience the magic of the Disney parks.
It felt like a slow month for photography so I was surprised I was able to come up with twelve I deemed worthy (still not sure about that second table photo). The Disney trip saved me photography-wise. Some months I find myself taking a bit of a break from photography. I have a feeling November will be a busy one again as I start up another workshop with Reuben Radding.
